Transcendental Meditation: A Reflection Into Our Souls

September 3, 2020

A Brief History

Nations have practiced meditation across time, and at one point its potential benefits were common knowledge. Unfortunately, in today’s age the ancient ways are lost, and civilization has lost the zeal for life that philosophers such as Yogi Vivekenanda celebrated. In a time where virtually all information is a keyboard away, one might assume that the philosophers’ ways would remain common knowledge, but contemporary life is full of distractions. The benefits of meditation are boundless because humanity, in and of itself, is infinite. Transcendental meditation is as simple as learning what the self is. It is the process of transcending human boundaries by visualizing the soul and its connection to God and nature. When we imagine nature and our connection to it, mysteries reveal themselves. It gives us insight on our soul and can even reveal deep repressed emotions.

Throughout the years I have watched how these methods can transform us into who we are meant to be. I have seen transcendentalism help the average joe add some focus into their life, and more surprisingly help individuals get off medication. The human being desires to be boundless, and the mind is the perfect example of this. We are essentially unhindered in our imagination, look at the entertainment industry. It is a spiral of endless potentiality. The problem is that we cannot see this, and without this realization chaos can enter our lives. We are so enveloped in our own problems that it is hard to see nature’s reflection. That is why transcendental meditation is so important, it brings us back to a time where there was no separation.

Helping James

A couple of years ago when I was teaching transcendentalism to a group of colleagues, an old friend came to me, who, for anonymity’s sake, we can call, “James.” He was a prominent member of his church and this offered him stability in his life, but after a tragic family ordeal he had lost his faith. This caused several problems; he was depressed, could not sleep, and it was hard for him to create meaningful relationships. His whole life, James used Christianity to connect with God, but with his separation from the church, he was searching for a new way to connect. When I first talked to him, the man was in disarray, having lost his feeling of self and identity.

I realized his state and we began working with each other shortly after. We started with a simple meditation, focusing on the trees. I told him to visualize the trees as his life force and vice versa. This meditation in specific is one of the most powerful techniques, soon becoming his personal favorite. I told him how we keep the trees alive with carbon dioxide, and they keep us alive with oxygen. James was looking for a way to connect with nature, so I brought him right to the center of it. The most profound thing about transcendentalism is the immediate effects one can experience. Within the first week of doing these meditations his spirit lifted, and he was getting better sleep than he had for months.

A Renewed Person

Soon enough, James had regained his love for life and a newfound faith in the Supreme. Now he can feel the connection he once had with Christianity in his meditations. Transcendental meditation is not about talking to God, but about letting him talk to you, or rather through you. We are all his creation, and his life is in us. It is all about letting go and feeling the beautiful stream of Divine intelligence within our own souls.
