How To Use Aromatherapy at Home

The use of essential oils in aromatherapy targets various emotional and physical troubles. Commonly, aromatherapists are trained massage therapists that have learned to incorporate essential oils into their practice for added benefits. But did you know you can bring aromatherapy into your home for everyday use and continued benefits?

In fact, with the use of diffusers for inhalation and rollers for application to skin you can improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, soothe nausea or heartburn, and ease a pounding headache.

For Sleep

A popular reason people choose aromatherapy is for improved sleep. People who are experiencing high levels of fatigue as well as insomnia can find beneficial effects in some oils.

Useful scents include lavender and chamomile. The scent of lavender triggers the brain to promote feelings of relaxation while chamomile aids to induce sleep.

Specifically, chamomile can be irritating to the skin, so your best options are to use these oils in a diffuser beside your bed or place a few drops on the underside of your pillowcase. Lavender oil may also be safely diluted in a hot bath before bed.

For Anxiety

Anxiety is a difficult experience to treat daily without medication. However, many are finding reduced levels of stress and anxious feelings throughout their day when utilizing essential oils daily.

When used in a diffuser for inhalation, orange can help reduce feelings of anxiety and is capable of uplifting energy levels with its zesty appeal to the senses.

With its calming effects, lavender can also be handy in stressful and overwhelming situations. Use it as a roller on your wrist to casually carry this soothing scent with you.

Lastly, another great oil to include for managing your anxiety is ylang ylang. This oil became popular for its ability to boost one’s confidence. If you wish to wear it, this oil is potent and can be irritating to the skin if not diluted in carrier oil – best to run it through a diffuser in your living room or office.

For Nausea

Essential oils can also be useful for treating physical ailments. We can use peppermint oil to target symptoms of nausea and heartburn.

Just like peppermint tea is good for an upset stomach, simply the scent can yield the same results. This is from the cooling sensation menthol delivers.

Dilute in your diffuser as this is a strong oil or massage with carrier oil into your stomach area. It is not recommended to consume essential oils and peppermint oil cannot be used to make your own tea.

For Headaches

A lesser known target of essential oil can be headaches and migraines. This one is tricky as some people become over stimulated by scents and can worsen your headache. With the right subtle scents, you can turn down the throbbing.

The first oil you will want to reach for is rosemary. The most beneficial property in this situation is its ability to alleviate pain. A study on this essential oil has proven its effectiveness to be slightly greater than acetaminophen – also well known as Tylenol.

Also, commonly used in spas, you can create a relaxing steamy shower with eucalyptus to ease a headache. It has been recorded that eucalyptus oil reduces swelling and inflammation.

Use either of these oils topically by massaging onto your temples and across your forehead.

Take Away

There are many easy ways to incorporate a few basic essential oils into your life. With diffusers and rollers you can do your own aromatherapy at home for everyday ailments from headaches and nausea to soothing a troubled mind that may be affecting your sleep.

Use essential oils with caution, as the pure extractions from plants are very potent. Hence, make sure they are safe for use on skin before wearing, and mix with carrier oils or other dilution methods to avoid external and internal irritations. Your best bet for at home treatment will be diluting in water for use in a diffuser.
